Description of service
I purchased a on-time session that included microdermabrasion of the face and neck. The esthetician also used the dermabrasion wand on the backs of my hands, though this was not listed as being included in the service I purchased. The entire session lasted just under an hour and included a mini facial. The esthetician cleansed my skin, performed facial massage, and made extractions prior to using the wand. Afterwards, she applied moisturizer and sunscreen to my face and neck. She provided a sample packet of a special mask that I was instructed to use for two consecutive days to reduce redness.
The service cost $100. I provided a separate $10 cash gratuity for the esthetician. The spa's policies did not include a provision for mandatory gratuities.
Review of Service
The overall experience was not as relaxing as a traditional facial, though there was minimal physical discomfort. My skin did look smoother and more even afterwards, though the effect was not as dramatic as I had hoped. The results lasted about a month. Redness was minimal. I was able to apply make-up within a few hours, but there was some mild burning for the remainder of the day whenever sweat came into contact with my skin. Overall, I did feel there was some benefit to my appearance, but I was not impressed enough with the results to commit to additional treatments.
Tips
Consult with the esthetician prior to booking the service. Be honest bout your expectations and ask specific questions about the potential to correct your main concerns, such as dark spots or scarring. Another treatment may be more appropriate for your needs.
I would recommend purchasing a series of sessions, as opposed to just one, if you determine that microdermabrasion is the option to pursue. The esthetician recommended a series of five to address my specific concerns about discoloration and mild scarring. If you are committed up front to more than one session, then it can be cheaper to purchase a package deal. Multiple treatments produce deeper results that last longer.
