Description of service
When my parents decided to move from their long-time residence in Phoenix, I flew there to help them sort through their belongings and they gave me a lot of their furniture and other items to use/store for them at my house in Dallas. I rented a box truck on short notice and drove it myself, and the total cost was $934, which included $135 per day for the two-day rental, a $300 drop fee for a one-way rental, 1100 miles at 22 cents a mile, and $122 in taxes and other charges.
Review of service
I was satisfied with the truck itself and there were no mechanical or other problems on the trip, but I was surprised at how expensive it was to rent on short notice. I was lucky that a truck was available, but the daily rate of $135 was about double what I had expected, and the drop fee of $300 also seemed high, but that was consistent with other companies that I called. But I agreed to the charges so I consider the price to be fair for the use of the truck and driving it across three states.
Tips
Try to reserve the truck as far in advance as possible, and definitely call around for better rates. One thing I did not think of until after the trip was that I should have called some Dallas truck rental companies to see if they had a truck in Phoenix that I could return for them and avoid the drop fee; that is something others might consider.
