Description of service
The local DSL company has regular dial -up, regular DSL(which I think is 384mps)and fiber-optic based DSL. The Fiber Optic DSL is definitely faster, even with several applications open, and all three are offered without limitations for time on or throughput-- at least to noncommercial customers.
Review of Service
Yes, the fiber optic based DSL is faster, but in retrospect I don't think it's that great a deal, at least not for me. It's 39 dollars a month for the first 3 months, then 69 a month for the remaining 9 months of a 1-year contract. They offer a 2 year contract as well, but I was reluctant to go with such a long term deal. Fiber optic based DSL is a lot faster if you use services like Rhapsody or iTunes, and maybe for online gaming, but I have no interest in any of these things, so now I question whether it was such a great deal. (The regular DSL is about 38 a month, unless you reup and get a 1 year contract, in which case it's 20 per month for 3 months and 29 per month for the remainder of the contract-- so it's a substantial difference.
Tips
As I suggested above, the speed difference makes more of a difference for online streaming of music and video, and probably online gaming, but I don't think it's worth the extra money over regular DSL for ordinary web browsing and emailing.
