Description of service
I hired a piano tuner to come to my home to tune my upright piano. I had just moved to my home and my piano needed tuned. I hadn't gotten it tuned in at least a few years. Everytime you move a piano, it is suggested that you have it tuned. This is why the tuner will come to your house. Not to mention the weight of a piano. It is also suggested that you get it tuned every 6-12 months or it will end up costing more money, assuming it can be tuned at that point.
The tuner came to my home when I was available. I got to pick the date and time. I did not get a "window" of time that he would arrive, just a set appointment time. After he arrived on time, he opened the top of my piano, and proceded to tune it. He had a few special tools which I later found out were a piano tuning wrench, tuning fork, and a set of mutes. It took him about 55 minutes to tune my piano. When he had completed the tuning, he asked me to play it a bit so I could tell him if I was satisfied with the sound.
I don't know how much the tools he used costs, but the ability to hear differences in pitch is what I feel I paid him for. Also, the knowledge of how to tune a piano.
Review of Service
I feel I got an excellent deal for the price. This particular piano tuner was very skilled and professional. I found out later that if you don't get your piano tuned every 6-12 months, it can make tuning much more diffcult. You may even have to pay for additional tunings. If you haven't had your piano tuned in several years, piano tuners may even be unable to tune ihe piano. For how long it was since my piano's last tuning, I was pleasantly surprised that he was able to tune it in a timely manner and to my satisfaction.
I also liked the fact that I got to pick the appointment and the time I picked was the time he arrived. No waiting for four hours wondering what time he would show up. The professionalism was well worth the price.
Another aspect of the service I received was that he asked me to play the piano to see if I felt it was properly tuned. He is the one with the skills and an ear for pitch, but he understood that I am paying for his service and it is more important for me to be satisfied than for him to feel satisfied with the end result.
I received quality service for the price I paid.
Tips
If someone you know has had a great experince from a piano tuner, then get that piano tuner's phone number. I whink word of mouth is the best advertising.
Get your piano tuned regularly. If you don't, you may end up spending at least twice as much as a simple piano tuning.
Ask around at music stores for who they recommend or use for their pianos. This is also an excellent way to find great service.
If you do get your piano tuned, make sure you play the piano before the tuner leaves so you can tell him/her if you're satisfied. If you wait until after he leaves, then you will have to schedule another appointment and he/she may even charge you for it.
Don't try to tune your piano yourself. You could potentially damage your piano and it will cost a lot more to have it fixed. Also, piano tuners have an ear for pitch and have usually been doing this service for awhile. Pay for the experience and less headache for yourself.
I wish I had known the average price of a piano tuning before I hired one. I was lucky and got a competitive price of $100. Piano tuners average on $50-$200 for a tuning. Call around to get prices from piano tuners so you know what the average price is in your area.
