Description of service
The cost covered the removal of carpet, carpet pad, and tack strips from a staircase and replacing them with hardwood flooring.
The shop was a general flooring shop that offered installation of carpet and wood (laminate and real wood) flooring. Prices for the material varied depending on the quality and popularity. Installation was $100 plus $2 per square foot.
Review of Service
We decided to replace the carpeting on our stairs with hardwood flooring to match the rest of what we have on the first floor of our house. We figured since we could slip and slide around on the hardwood in socks that we'd need to find something grippier than what was elsewhere in the house. After some searching we found a company that had flooring that looked like ours, but with a slightly gritty texture to it, designed specifically for stairs.
We placed an order at their local dealer, and a week later three guys came to rip out our carpets and put the new stuff in. It took them about four hours to do the entire staircase, which I thought seemed a bit slow, but since we were paying by the square foot, not by the hour it didn't matter much.
I'm not sure I like the results. It's installed well and the stairs are more grippy when wearing socks than the regular hardwood flooring, but the footing still isn't as secure as the carpet we replaced. I suppose we could just go barefoot, but the floors are cold on winter mornings.
Tips
Ideally you'd want to do all the floors in the house at the same time if you're replacing them and want them all the same color because floors can be tough to color match as various styles, stain colors, and finishes move in and out of the manufacturer's product line.
