the Cost of Freelance Editors

A friend of mine runs a small theater group and was interested in me adapting a short story I'd written into a play. I am well versed on creative writing in a fiction format but had never written a play before. I hired a local theater student to edit it for stage directions and dramatic technical technique.

The student did a great job. My friend would have happily gone over and cleaned it up herself but I was really excited about the project and wanted to impress her with a perfect and professional script. After the editor I hired finished with the script it looked great. My friend was really impressed. It did take a little longer than I'd be promised, as it was finals weeks. I was understanding, as I've been there, but I felt if it was a busy time the editor should have given me an estimate that was a bit longer. I wasn't in a huge hurry to get it back, I just wanted to know when to expect it.

If you're doing something casual like this you may as well use a student. It'll give them great experience and save you quite a few bucks.
