Description of service
My child had taken Spanish in 8th grade and wanted to keep her knowledge fresh by speaking Spanish over the summer. We were able to find a high school student who was interested in tutoring over the summer for a fee. This was a one on one exchange and a good way to keep the language fresh. I was surprised at the amount of new vocabulary they tackled. This was a weekly session that met for about an hour each time. However, because it was a student doing the lessons, they didn't mind staying later sometimes when they got onto a good discussion.
Review of Service
We were very happy with the level of commitment to the lessons our teacher had. He came prepared with subjects to learn about and vocabulary to learn. He also provided some worksheets to work through over the week. Sometimes they just conversed in Spanish the whole time and sometimes they worked harder on using new vocabulary and gaining a better accent. We were all very pleased with the arrangement and I would do the same thing next summer, if at all possible.
Tips
Call the local high school or community college to look for a student that is proficient in the language you are interested in learning. Some people have more of an aptitude for languages and enjoy them, so that is the kind of person you want to find to teach your child.
