Description of service
The local health department offers a family planning service for $4 per month for birth control pills. It includes a "yearly" female exam and blood work.
Review of Service
This is just basic service, offered by nurses and a nurse practioner. If they find any abnormalities they will refer you to a doctor. If you cannot afford a regular doctor they generally have funding available to assist you or have a doctor that they send their patients to at a reduced cost.
Tips
This service is generally not offered on a daily basis, it's usually just one or two days every other week. Appointments are not necessary but may be given if you request it. Don't count on being able to use this system for a cheap yearly exam, however. Women who have been surgically sterilized pay a higher sliding rate, generally around $20 per year. If it is anything that is out of the ordinary, expect to be referred to another doctor. If you are one of those who has a higher blood pressure reading at the doctor's office (anxiety) than normal, don't expect to be seen. They will generally refuse to go any further once they see a borderline high reading and send you to another doctor for evaluation.
