the Price of Storage Space

I needed to store household goods when I had a lapse in moving out and finding a new place. I rented a small space and it was really small indeed. This is a nationally advertised storage company.

The clerk at the store was an idiot. She let us stand there forever while she took a personal call on the company phone. She had refused to let us reserve and pay by phone claiming you could not do that, but you actually can. The $1 first month turned out not to mention a large "service charge" that you had to pay so you saved very little.

I decided to cancel the rental as the unit seemed damp and smelled bad and was really too small for my things. A larger space was prohibitively expensive as well. Also, the small units were all upstairs with no elevator. I have orthopedic problems and this was very undesirable.

Trying to cancel or get information was hell. That clerk never answered the phone and you always got an answering machine. Messages were never returned either. Several people I know had exactly the same problem with this company. I would be very hesitant to use them ever again. For what it's worth, they fired this manager before I was done with the company.

Shop around for storage and get competitive quotes. Be very suspicious of introductory offers and find out about any hidden charges. You may be better off paying more rent and storing your own stuff than paying storage rates. Also, be sure to pay for insurance since these things can leak!
