Description of service
The class offered at the local technical college was a continuing education class for anyone to take. It was about a one month class, with classes meeting once a week for three hours. The class size is kept small so there is plenty of direct attention, and taught how to make functional baskets in the Ozark style, and we learned plaited, ribbed, and wickerwork techniques. We learned about the indigenous plants in the area used for basket making, and also how to make natural dyes.
Review of Service
This class was excellent. I can't believe it was only $45. We learned so many techniques, had a great time, and actually came out of the class with functional baskets that we had hand-weaved. The teacher was very knowledgable, and everyone in the class got he direct attention they needed. In addition to learning how to do the craft, we also learned about the history of Appalachian basketry and how it has transformed over the years.
Tips
Taking continuing education classes at the community college here is an excellent value. They offer a wide range of classes, and the basket weaving class is an exceptional value. The class can also be repeated as many times as you want to continue to gain experience and instruction. My only tip is to get a friend to enroll with you, and to enroll early as class space is limited!
