Description of service
Last summer I decided it was time to pick up a paint brush for the first time in a very long time and try my hand at watercolors. The local newspaper often runs articles about the art league and watercolor artists in the area that offer group lessons. I'm not much more than a novice with watercolors, so I signed up for a beginning class offered by the art league. The price included all the supplies because as beginners we didn't know exactly what we would need. Supplies included watercolor stock paper, watercolor paints, and the use of a variety of watercolor brushes. The price of 120 dollars was for a total of 6 lessons that ran for 90 minutes each and lasted 6 weeks. The lesson was in a group setting with 12 other students, all adults.
Review of Service
I was quite pleased with the quality of the lessons. The instructor was a talented watercolorist, but she was patient with us beginners. We were taught the techniques to enable us to continue to develop this skill on our own. We were allowed to keep our finished products, a total of 6 paintings which we were also encouraged to finish at home if we didn't have time in class. I only wish I had had even more time to aquire better technique. Now that I have taken a group beginner class I might consider moving to the next level, but I don't think I'll ever be good enough to justify paying for individual lessons.
Tips
My advice for someone considering taking any kind of lessons, especially if you are an adult who has been out of school for a number of years, is to just go for it, and don't be embarrassed if you're a little rusty. Even if you don't acquire great skills or proficiency, it's a good socializing opporunity with others who share an interest or passion. Be sure to do whatever homework your teacher assigns so you'll be prepared for the next lesson. And choose classes that are offered close to home if possible.
