Description of service
I opened a small business about 18 miles out of the city limits. I visited the Chamber of Commerce to find out what services they offered to small businesses. I was told my membership would include being listed in their tourist brochure for accommodations and it would be updated yearly. I would also receive recognition as a good business partner with the town. Brochures and pamphlets were to be sent to me for tourists. Also, told that I would be included in county functions and city functions. Payment was for membership only. I didn't even receive a certificate stating I was a member of the Chamber of Commerce.
Review of Service
Being a new business owner and new to the community, I felt it would be a good way to support the city and get good advertising for my business. I have been a member for over a year and received nothing from them. My money went to I believe supporting the staff only. No certificate. I did get my business in the brochure but I later found out it was through the county and not the city to which I joined. I would never have joined had I known they were like this. I don't even receive their monthly newsletter. Although I hear they have one. I called and was given the runaround and they profusely apologized but still I am waiting for the info they promised.
Tips
Before you join, don't do what I did. Go in and speak directly with them. Have them show you what you can expect from them and what they expect from you. My suggestion would be that the Chambers have a packet to give to new businesses.
