Description of service
As a food addict, I decided to try a weight loss therapy group that was offered for free in my hometown. The concept was to meet once a week and discuss your eating disorder and support each other in your trials and tribulations in battling this disorder. The group was supposed to give you ideas and resources on how to fight the addiction and introduce you to other that share your addiction. We met at 10 AM on a Saturday at a local community building. I only attended one time because the meeting was not for me.
Review of Service
I would only recommend this group therapy service to Christians. I am a pagan and was offended by their tactics and unable to relate to anything they were talking about because it was all bent towards the Christian faith. The ad they placed in the paper did not mention this, or I would not have gone. The very first thing they mentioned was that you had to turn your life over to God to save yourself. I stayed for the whole session, but never went back. I am sure this would be a great group therapy treatment for Christians, as it uses their faith to help them fight their addiction to food, but for a non-Christian, its alienating and impossible to relate to in my opinion.
Tips
Call before you attend. Free services are available to people needing therapy and wanting it in a group session; however, I have since discovered that a lot of them are sponsored by Christian churches. This is definitely not a bad thing, but it is something that they should make plainly visible in their ads. If you are in doubt or have questions, call before you go.
