Description of service
The price was for removal of a popcorn ceiling finish ($300), laying down some plaster ($1200), and painting the ceilings ($1000) in a 2300 square foot house.
As professional painters they also do walls, cabinets, and concrete floors, as well as exterior finishes of all sorts. Prices vary depending on the difficulty of the job.
Review of Service
The popcorn ceiling had become far too dirty over the years to simply repaint it, at least that's what we found when we grabbed some rollers and tried to do it ourselves. The paint stuck, dried, and then started to peel off the ceiling in sheets. So we called some pros. We called a contractor figuring we'd just done it wrong, and they (along with a chat with a realtor about the potential improvement in the market value of our house) convinced us that we might as well have the popcorn removed while we were at it since it would likely be pretty substantially damaged in cleaning anyway.
Overall the process took about a week and we had to move into a hotel one night as they did the bedrooms. The result is quite nice. Very smooth and clean, though with a bit more echo than before.
Tips
Popcorn ceilings are a simple and cheap way of finishing the ceiling in a house. They tend to flake off, attract dust, and be harder to clean than a plaster or tile ceiling. They're also a bit outdated in their look. They do, however contribute to noise attenuation and you shouldn't feel the need to go removing them if you don't have to.
