Description of service
I need a lot of dental work completed, and the first step in that process is the periodontal work. I have had both scaling, where the gum is cut open, lifted up and infected tissue removed before being sewn back in place, and a gingervectimy, which involves just removing excess gum tissue. These procedures are necessary in order to allow for a better impression to be taken for bridges, crowns, and caps. They can be performed with either a large amount of Novocaine injected into the gum tissue, or by a general anesthetic like nitrous oxide.
Review of Service
The dentist was very professional, and apologetic because he knows that this can be one of the most painful procedures, I found both of these procedures more painful than root canal, and he does not believe in general anesthesia. He got me very numb, and worked diligently, and efficiently, working his way across my mouth in order to repair the damage. Generally speaking, only one hemisphere of the mouth is done at a time. Like many dentists, he took a pleasure in being chatty when I was unable to answer.
Tips
Eat beforehand! This is a painful procedure and you will certainly not want to eat a meal for a few hours afterward. Also, take some kind of pain medication, like Ibuprofen, as soon as the Dentist is done, do not wait for the Novocain to wear off. Finally, be sure to rinse with warm salt water. It helps.
