After visiting my regular dentist for a normal cleaning appointment she explained to me that I needed to see a periodontist about my gums. They were swollen and would bleed very easily. She refered me to a periodonstist for a periodontal cleaning. The cost was not covered by my dental insurance. I had to pay twelve hundred dollars. The periodontal cleaning is used to remove bacteria and such from underneath the gum line. While expensive it can help with problems like chronic bad breath.

The periodontal cleaning for me personally was very painful. I had never had one done before and my gums were very sensitive from being swollen anyway. The doctor was patient with me as I yelped in pain a little here and there during the procedure. After three visits she declared my gums healthy. She also presribed a special mouth rinse to help prevent the problems from occuring again. I would recomend this service to anyone who feels that their gums are more tender or swollen then usual. I have had no problems since.

Ask your dentist for a referal to a good periodontist. Also, find out if your dental insurance covers this service, if not ask about a payment plan.
