Description of service
I took a cooking class offered by a local cookware shop. The course was on basic knife skills. The course lasted for two hours. The course was taught by a trained chef who covered all the basic techniques of cutting with a French-style knife. It included a demonstration of how to dice, slice, chop, mince, fillet, and debone. The chef also covered how we should sharpen and care for our knives. He also discussed how to store them properly.
Review of Service
The course was a little basic for someone who'd cooked a lot. For people who were not comfortable with knives and cutting, this would've been an excellent course. The class was small, with only a dozen people. It was small enough to give the chef time to come up and help each individual student with his form. A lot of the less experienced cooks loved the course. It gave them the confidence to tackle the complicated recipes that they never felt capable of doing in the past. But for me, it was just too slow and a bit dull.
I would recommend this to anyone who is a new cook, e.g. a student going off to college or a new bride. The instructor was very friendly and knowledgeable, but it just wasn't for me!
Tips
Ask family and friends for recommendations about courses. If I had asked around, I would've found out that this was a bit too slow for me and I would've signed up for something more advanced.
