The phone itself can cost between 60 and 150 dollars - a one-time investment, but the monthly fee is only $3, not counting the charge for broadband access since you would be paying for that to get online anyway. There is no other charge, tax, fee, etc.

It seems almost too good to be true, but with technology bringing us into the future so rapidly, everyone has used a voice chat program. It is just an extension of that to have a phone running the same program instead of having your computer run it.

What this also means is that your friend could be using that same chat program halfway around the world and when they initiate a voice chat with you, you will receive a phone call on your Voice over IP phone - a convenient handheld device - and talk to them just like you would on a regular phone.

The advantage is that you don't have to rely on the computer or be stuck to it to have a voice chat carried over the Internet to the other party's landline or cell phone.

Another awesome advantage is that the service I tried allows you to call anyone in the U.S. or Canada as much as you want for the stated monthly fee! Imagine that!

This works great if the Internet connection is not shaky, because that is what carries the call for the most part. Nowadays, this is not a problem in most places, especially with any type of broadband access.

Overall, a great value. I would recommend it to anyone who already has broadband Internet access.

Invest in a good phone initially. There are major brand name companies that make such phone now. Beyond that, make sure to check with your Internet Service Provider that you are receiving the maximum connection speed for which you are paying them, which will in turn ensure good quality phone calls using Voice over IP.
