Description of service
When my brother accepted a new job in Ohio and moved from California, his new company agreed to reimburse him for his reasonable moving expenses, but he had to pay all of the charges up front. He didn't have the money, so I agreed to pay the bills and I did get repaid several months later. We hired a national long-distance mover to transport all of the items in his house, and the total $9800 bill included $5100 for transportation, $1200 for fuel, $900 for insurance, $1400 for packing labor and materials, and $1200 of origin and valuation charges and other minor amounts.
Review of Service
Although moving a long distance can be difficult, the moving company and relocation team that we worked with really did a nice job of coordinating everything from the initial visit to examine the items, to the packing, transport and final delivery. As everything was unpacked over the next few weeks, there were only minor damages to note, and overall we were very satisfied with the service. The cost seemed reasonable but because it was reimbursed, I did not look too hard at alternative movers. The actual weight of it all was 9200 pounds and it took a full-length truck to move everything, but it was handled professionally and timely, and we did not have any complaints.
Tips
All of the various charges are negotiable and you should be sure to get a detailed and complete estimate of the final cost before you hire a mover and sign a contract. It is definitely worth comparison shopping because this is a large expense, and you should be able to successfully push for a corporate or some other type of discount to help out.
