Description of service
While we were out on a local lake, another boat came too close to our boat as we were going to the dock and there was damage to the starboard side of our vessel. The other boat did not have insurance, so we were forced to have the boat repaired ourselves. We took the recommendation of a friend and used a local repair shop that charged us a total of $2700 to repair the damaged section.
Review of Service
Although the damage did not appear major at first view, the cost to repair fiberglass is expensive and the total bill was a little higher than we expected. The quote range was $1500 to $3000 and it was within that range, but close to the high end and, as with auto repairs, it is hard to tell if you are being treated fairly. We went ahead with the service and it was done on time and that section of the boat shows no indication that it was worked on, but it did take them almost a week to complete the job. There are only a few boat repair facilities in our area, so our choices were limited, but they did a good job with the repair.
Tips
Unlike auto damage, boats need to be repaired in order to maintain the structural integrity of the boat, so seriously consider having insurance and also get at least two recommendations of repair shops from your friends or other boaters.
