Description of service
This was a free candle making class for children and their parents/guardians offered by a local nature center. I took my niece who is 7 years old. The class lasted a couple of hours and was very informative. We got to make two dipped taper candles together and were able to take them home. The wax was beeswax donated by a local beekeeper. The teacher told us the history of beeswax and also showed us other methods to make candles (like forms and molds and jars, etc.). They also had the beekeeper there to answer questions and he brought in some of his bees behind glass to show the kids.
Review of Service
This was a really great class and we were so impressed that it was free and all the supplies were donated. My niece loved it and I really enjoyed it too. The kids were all so into it. They would get really quiet when they were dipping their wicks over and over and watching the candle form before their eyes. It was really cool. The teacher was a big nature buff and told us the history of beeswax but also plugged in there the problems we are currently having with the bees dying off and how important bees are to humans. The kids just drank all of this information up. The kids loved looking at all of the beekeeping stuff and the bees best. It was just a great class and I hope they offer it again.
Tips
If you get the opportunity to do something like this, do it. Even if its not free, what you will learn and experience with the kids and just for yourself is worth it. I learned lots about bees and really enjoyed making the candles with the kids too. I had never made a candle that way and could almost be a kid in a way. It was just a great way to spend an afternoon.
