Description of service
I went into the BMW repair location to have my headliner repaired. The small tabs had broken off inside the track that guides the headliner back when the sunroof goes back. They took the headliner off, put in a new headliner piece, and greased the tracks of the sunroof to hopefully prevent it from happening again.
Review of Service
I made an appointment for the service and waited about 45 minutes while they performed the procedure. I was shocked at how much the service cost, but I understand that it is pretty labor intensive. This procedure was also not covered by my full warranty, which I found annoying. After calling other locations though, I realized that no one covered it under the warranty and I would have to fork over if I wanted my sunroof to work correctly. Afterward, it retracted smoothly and I haven't had problems since.
Tips
According to the mechanic, this tends to happen a lot because the pieces that keep the headliner in the track are made of rather light plastic. When the sun beats down on the roof of the car, especially if it is kept outside, it dries up the lubricating oil and makes the plastic brittle and more likely to break. He told me to never move the headliner on my own so that it was more likely to stay on the track and I wouldn't break it by forcing the piece.
