Description of service
My husband got a vasectomy. A vasectomy is a surgical method of birth control that prevents sperm from leaving he body. It basically makes the man infertile and incapable of fathering a child. A surgeon will make small incision in the scrotum. The vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm, are located and then cut. Finally, the incision is closed with one or more stitches. The entire procedure usually lasts about 20 minutes and is basically pain free. A topical anesthetic is used, then a a local injected anesthetic is used to numb the area. Mild anti-anxiety medication is usually offered, if necessary.
Review of Service
The procedure is fast and painless. I appreciated that the physician explained everything to us thoroughly. She also interviewed us as a couple to ensure this was the right birth control method for us. She explained the procedure and outlined any after effects that might occur. Costs and insurance coverage were explained as well. The staff were helpful and considerate, helping me understand what I should do and what to expect as the process progressed. I found the procedure to be less difficult than the average dental appointment.
Tips
Understanding your long term goals for birth control is extremely important when considering a vasectomy. This procedure can sometimes be reversed, but it should be considered a permanent sterilization. It's not a difficult procedure, but one will need a companion to drive hone afterward.
