Description of service
The procedure took a total of 3 office visits. The first was to sit down with me and have me watch videos and learn about the procedure. The doctor took me in and had a discussion with me regarding my reasons, risks, concerns, and options. We decided to proceed, and about a week later I came in, was given local anesthetic, had the vas deferens sealed, and had my wounds dressed. The whole procedure took about 20 minutes. I was able to drive myself home. The third was a visit about 1 month later, where I provided a sperm sample that they tested, which came back negative.
The entire price of the procedure was $450, but almost all insurances cover this, and I only paid a $20 copay. I also had to pay a prescription drug copay of $20 for the pain killers that I had to fill.
Review of Service
Overall, I was pleased with the result, as I am now sterile. There was a fair amount of pain, but I think that is pretty par for the course. I did end up getting 2 infections afterward. I don't blame the doctor, some times these things happen, but after the second one I was a little leery about my quality of care. The doctor was very professional and made me feel as comfortable as possible. Even though I only had to pay the $20 copay, I would have gladly paid for $450 for it if I did not have insurance. The cost of children is significantly higher in comparison.
Tips
The doctor is going to tell you to put ice on it afterward to reduce swelling. I suggest frozen peas. It doesn't hurt as much as you might think, although it's impossible for there not to be pain. Keep the area very clean afterward.
