I used to have a cat that I got from an animal shelter. I got its shots and never saw a vet again. I didn't see any reason, it was never sick. It died from an infection in its mouth from some kind of gum disease. I was sad and embarrassed.
I recently got another cat. I got its shots and I take it to the vet once a year. This year, the vet told me I should have its teeth cleaned.

I now understand preventive medicine for pets.
The vet said I should have it done about every three years. It's a deep cleaning and I had to leave her there all day. I took her early in the morning, they sedated her, called me when the procedure was over and then kept it the rest of the day and I picked her up about 6:30 p.m. She went home and slept all night.
The vet suggested a certain brand of cat food to help keep her teeth clean.
Tips
Pets are just like people. They need their teeth cleaned just like we do. If preventative measures aren't used, it can lead to serious problems that cannot be reversed.
You can't do it yourself good enough - get your vet's advice.
