Description of service
I got a mouth guard that was specially made to fit my mouth. The cost of the guard was $400. The dentist visit for the fitting was included in the price of the guard.
I've been grinding my teeth since I was a little kid but as I get older my teeth have become severely worn down. My dentist finally talked me into getting a mouth guard after I started complaining about having headaches.
Review of Service
The procedure to have a mold taken of my mouth wasn't bad. It was a little uncomfortable but it went pretty quickly. My dentist sent the mold off somewhere that actually made the mouth guard. It took about two weeks to get it back. It's definitely helped me by decreasing the amount of jaw pain I wake up with and I've noticed a decrease in headaches.
The problem I had with this came from my dentist. He had told me that my insurance considered this a 'cosmetic' issue and wouldn't be covering it. He did not, however, tell me that it would cost $400! It was quite surprising and embarrassing because I was unable to pay for it when it came in.
Tips
Be sure to ask for a specific price quote up front to avoid sticker shock once it's too late to actually say no to a night guard.
