Description of service
We got trumpet lessons for our high school son at the local university through the music department. They have instructors that spend about 30-45 minutes with the student. Each instructor is a musician in the department that has been trained to give lessons. We had a student teacher who was learning to become a band director. They payment was paid monthly and you still pay if you miss a lesson for your own reasons. Sometimes they were flexible enough to reschedule. I did not see a breakdown for how the payment was divided up. I think it all went to the teacher, as far as I know.
Review of Service
We were very pleased with the quality of instruction our son received. He improved dramatically while he took lessons. The Instructor he was assigned did very well with connecting with our son as a student and a musician. We were pleased with the individual attention he received and the level of skill he attained through meeting with and practicing music with an accomplished musician. I think the student teacher was very motivated to do well and had a knack for teaching. His profession will suit him very well.
Tips
Make sure there is some kind of connection between the student and the teacher. This made a huge difference in our experience with music lessons. The motivation to practice and to meet each week was there from the first time he met with the instructor. It may help that they were closer in age, but I think it really had to do with love of music and playing the trumpet.
