Description of service
I pulled up the carpet in my dining room last fall and found mostly undamaged oak slats underneath. I found out that I would need to refinish the entire floor: strip the varnish, sand out the stains and inconsistencies, stain, seal, and buff it to perfection. It's a fairly labor intensive process with several steps that takes an average of two to three days to complete.
Review of Service
The service was well performed. The price was fair. I had hoped that it would cost a little less, but I researched in the area and researched doing the project on my own: realizing that I would much rather pay someone to do it than do the shotty untrained job I was likely to do. After comparing prices with a few different companies and private contractors, I found that on average, it was about $2.00-$2.50 per square foot on average in my area. My 15 x 15 room was quickly done and I signed off on the $450 ticket. Overall, the price was very fair and the service impeccable.
Tips
I had to shop around a lot to ensure that I got a fair price for the room. I researched a little online and compared with each contractor that I discussed pricing with. It seems that most businesses are on the same page with variation of about 25 cents here and there. Make sure you talk with several contractors and come prepared with the size of your room and a general idea of how much you want done to the floor and you should get a fair deal.
