Description of service
I took a two hour beginner's sewing class. It was a class of 6 people and one instructor. It was held within a retail store and introduced the students to basic sewing tools, terminology and technique. The $25 cost did not include materials, and a list of materials to be purchased was given at the time of registration. This list was a combination of things you may have already or may not. I spent an additional $15 on supplies.
Review of Service
When I signed up for the class I thought we would make something simple. The materials list instructed the students to purchase fabric, interfacing, scissors, pins, and thread. You could use their sewing machine or bring your own machine. I chose to bring my own. The class was extremely basic. The first part consisted of an introduction to basic tools such as scissors, measuring tape, different types of needles, pins, bobbins etc. Then there was a tour of the store and instructions on buying fabric. Then we were all shown extremely expensive sewing machines. During the second part of the class, it was assumed that we would know how to use the sewing machines, so we were left on our own to work with them. We didn't make anything with the fabric or interfacing.
Tips
If you sign up for a class, make sure you know exactly what is going to happen. What's taught will vary greatly by instructor, and may be more or less suited to your needs. I would recommend finding a class that is project based. I thought that a lot of information was given, but if you had any knowledge of basic sewing, you would already know it all.
