Description of service
I took lessons from a young woman in her home in order to learn the basics of sewing. Things covered in these lessons were choosing and sizing a pattern, alterations, basic stitches, fitting a pattern to a dress form, and other things like zippers, buttons, seams, hems, and correcting mistakes. One of the most valuable lessons learned was how to take old clothes from a thrift store and alter or completely change them. For example, how to make curtains from an old skirt.
Review of Service
This service was great! Because the classes were one on one, I was able to ask any question as it came up, and received individualized attention, "tailored" to my style (pardon the pun!) She had one small child, who was home but didn't get in the way at all, and was very happy to have the visitors, so this was not a drawback. This instructor was very willing to accompany me to the store to choose patterns, fabric, and accessories which would work for me. I learned a lot and would really recommend the service.
Tips
If you can, go to an online classifieds site and search for someone who may be willing to barter services. Maybe they want yard work or child care in exchange for lessons, or something to that effect. Don't be afraid to ask! Also, don't be afraid to find someone who will teach from their home, or yours. You will definitely not regret the one on one environment, or even if it's a small group, I wouldn't imagine that that would be a setback.
