The $100 was to add refrigerant to our aging window unit air conditioner. The individual came out and tested the air conditioner, assuming that it just needed refrigerant. Luckily he was correct and the refrigerant was added. The whole process was over with in less than two hours.

After calling the heating and cooling company, a representative was sent out the next day. Considering how many folks are just now starting up their air conditioners, I figure we called just in time to receive quick service.

Although $100 is quite a bit of money, there's no way we could've replaced this huge air conditioner any cheaper. The larger size of this one (which cools over half of our home) makes a newly purchased one in the price range of $500 or so.

When you call, especially if it's during a heat wave, expect a delay. Rarely are you able to get same day service. Also, understand that not all heat and air companies want to deal with window units, as they make their money selling you heat and air systems. Be persistent, though, because there are people out there that don't look down on you for not buying a new system.

Find out ahead of time how much a brand new air conditioner will cost. Having this information will enable you to make a better choice as to whether to have your old one repaired or to buy a new one. Don't overlook the possibility of buying a used air conditioner if the repair cost is too high.
