the Cost of Temporary Employees

Recently I had to hire temporary help to aide in the relocation process of my printing business. I did not use a staffing agency to locate the hired hand, I used word of mouth. I only needed the temporary help for 1 week and I hoped to not have to use a staffing service. I found out that there was a young man that is temporarily laid off from his regular job that was willing to step in and help me for a week. The work I needed done included, moving furniture, boxes and other equipment. I have a printing service, so the equipment is rather large and hard to handle. I also needed to have a few small maintenance repairs done before I finished the move. I told him to show up at 1:00 pm everyday, which he did. I paid him $10 an hour and he worked until 5:00 pm. This lasted from Monday until Friday. It was agreed form him to work only 1 week. He done a great job and was actually finished by Thursday, but I let him go ahead and work that Friday by allowing him to help me clean out the emptied space.

I cannot say enough about the job that this young man did for me. It is so hard to find a young person to work as hard as he did. The work was done correctly and efficiently. He not only showed up everyday on time, but even a few minutes early. He was eager to get started and never complained. Many people these days are lazy and have no ambition or pride in their work. This young man is not like that at all. He even cleaned the bathroom, which I did not ask him to! I only wish that I could have paid him more than what I did. He went above and beyond what most would. The equipment that I use in my business is extremely heavy. I also have boxes upon boxes of heavy paper and other materials. But, he never complained. I know that I was lucky in finding great temporary help. I am also glad that I didn’t use a service in this case. It is hard to know how someone is going to perform when you hire them, but I am very satisfied in the performance I received this time I hired a temporary employee.

I am glad that I did not use a staffing or temp agency in this case. I got lucky by using word of mouth. I also got lucky in finding someone that worked as hard as this young man did. You never know how a new hire is going to turn out until they start that first day. This situation turned out great, but I can see how it could have easily gone the other way. I am not against staffing or temp agencies at all. The only reason that I did not go through them this time is because of the short amount of time that I needed the help and I wanted to help this guy out. Also, my budget only allowed for me to pay only a certain amount. If I had gone through a temp agency, I would have had to pay more and I couldn’t do that right now. There are few people that have pride and ambition in working anymore. They expect to be babied and things given to them for little or no work. I feel lucky to have had the outcome that I did. It is rare to find a quinine hard working person.
