Description of service
This service was a basic check to see what was wrong with my car because it was shutting off when I drove it and it got to a point where it would not even turn on again. I had it towed to the business that I arranged to take it to and I left it there for a period of time to get checked out. The mechanic called me fairly soon after I had left and let me know what was going on with my car. what had happen was somehow my timing belt must have been going out and that is why my car was shutting down every so often, which I had no idea that that's what was going on or I would have brought it in sooner. Well apparently when the timing belt starts to go out it bends a bunch of valves in the engine and that causes even more parts of the car to freeze up and malfunction. So the mechanic told me that the car was not worth fixing because it would cost way more to fix then what the value of the car is worth. I decided not to fix it and just paid for the basic diagnosis.
Review of Service
Overall the value of this service was great for the price. I had known that most other places charge a lot more just for a diagnosis. Even though the news regaurding my car was bad I'm glad that this mechanic didn't try to convince me to pay for all of these repairs and I'm glad he was honest about it. He seemed to know what he was doing just by the fact that he barely had to turn the key to know what was wrong. I was a little upset when he had asked me if I had ever heard any noises or noticed any problems before then because it made me feel as if I should have known what was wrong. The only thing that I wasn't really excited about was the fact of how urgent he wanted the car towed away when we knew we weren't going to fix it, but I totally understand why he was like that. This mechanic is a very local business so that may have attributed to how fast I was able to have my car looked at, as he did not have many other cars to work on at the time. But overall I would recomend this mechanic.
Tips
If I had to do this over again obviously I wish I would have known what the problem is. But seeing as that can't happen I'm not sure what I wish I had known before this experience. I would tell people before they go to a mechanic to call around and ask what prices they charge for their services. Also check around with friends and family or on this website to see what other people think and see if they know of any specials that people may have. I would also say to try and keep the business local if at all possible especially how the economy is now, a lot of these small business are struggling and will sometimes have better deals because they need any business and customers they can get. I think if you just do your research and learn which places have good quality service for a resonable price you will not have a bad experience although just remember that you may not like what the person has to say about your car because its more than you want to pay. Just remember that car repairs cost money and its hard to know upfront how much you are looking at paying.
