Description of service
I don't know much about bikes but I did notice that my bike wasn't working as well as it used to. The gears seemed to be sticking a little bit and the brakes were squeaking a little. I took it to a local bike shop and they suggested that a general tune up would probably fix the problem.
Review of Service
The bike shop owner personally worked on my bike and was extremely nice. He told me everything he would do and that if there was anything additional he found that required parts he'd make sure I approved the cost before he went ahead. Thankfully it didn't need any extra parts. The bike rode tons better after he worked on it. The only complaint I have is that it did take longer than he anticipated. He said it would take 2 days but it was closer to 4. Luckily I don't use my bike often so it didn't interrupt any plans I had to use it.
Tips
Make sure you get in writing that they won't do any additional work without your approval. If you need your bike for a specific date make sure you either get you bike in well in advance or that you tell the shop guy when you need it by.
