Description of service
A local yarn store hosted a group sock knitting class. We were taught how to knit socks, plus we were given take home materials on sock knitting, and credit for further assistance.
The class lasted for approximately 3 hours, with a 30 minute break in the middle.
Skill level was beginner to intermediate, and the class was small, only 5 spots were available to maximize student to teacher ratio. Much one on one assistance was available, and the teacher was extremely patient.
Review of Service
At first I was apprehensive about paying $60 for something I could probably learn by watching videos online, but it was very worth it to have the teacher right there, you can ask questions! Also, it was fun learning something with a group of people, and of course seeing all of the beautiful yarn!
The teacher was excellent, she didn't gloss over details assuming we would know what she meant. If she used knitting jargon, she made sure everyone understood what she was talking about, and was very open to questions.
I was a bit frustrated that nobody mentioned wooden needles would be best for beginner sock knitting, but that was my own fault, I should have checked. Again, the teacher was patient, every time I dropped a needle she just chuckled and it made me feel at ease. I was so afraid of looking like a klutz, but it never happened.
Learning in a group or class environment was comforting, most of us were at the same skill level which really helped.
I especially loved taking a class in a store. Much less pressure than a classroom setting.
I came away from the class with half of a sock (which is right on par for a beginner sock knitter), and detailed written instructions, plus credit for two additional 30 minute personal help sessions if I needed help with my socks later. That value added service was excellent!
Overall I would highly suggest knitting classes, from beginners to long time knitters, you can always learn something new.
Tips
Most knitting shops hold classes, but some are one on one, and some are group classes. Make sure you ask first. Also, if you can get a list of supplies, do it!
Arrive early so you have plenty of time to pick out the yarn you want to use, and purchase it before the class starts.
