Description of service
I took piano lessons, and had to pay for the time that the piano teacher spent on the lesson (one half hour) and the materials that she recommend I buy. These books each had their own price (around $5 each) and were added on to the base cost.
Review of Service
I started taking these piano lessons many years ago, and haven't stopped. Somebody with the right drive and goals can learn a lot whilst taking these lessons. The teacher also held a Ph.D. In Music, so I knew that the skill I was learning was being taught right. The lessons often include the learning of a classical piece, a jazz piece, some theory and some drills for finger dexterity and strength, but the student is encouraged to bring in any piece that he or she might want to learn.
I began with the basics, such as hand position, bar notation, etc, and moved up to much higher and more impressive things. If for some reason I cannot go to a scheduled lesson, I have to pay full price when I miss it (as it is the teacher's source of income), but she is glad to reschedule the appointment so the money isn't wasted. Every year, all of the students in this class compose an original piece and it is published in a book of piano music. The $20 per lesson is well worth this lifelong skill.
Tips
As with any musical training, practice is critical. Even just 30 minutes a day can make all the difference in technique. Also, ask questions at the lesson if you're confused. You are paying to learn the material, not to sit there and take it all in.
