Description of service
An experienced high school music teacher comes to our house for one hour each week to give my daughter piano lessons. We have our own piano so it was our decision to have him come to our house instead of us taking her to the school. He spends one full hour with her each week and sometimes stays a little longer, depending on his schedule.
Review of Service
Over the almost two years that she has taken lessons, he has taught her how to play scales and some basic songs, but also encouraged her and helped her to appreciate and enjoy music. She has now moved on to more complicated pieces of music and really loves being able to play for family and friends when they come over. The instructor is very patient but also pushes her to advance and practice every day. We also have to push her to practice sometimes, but usually she does it on her own because she wants to make the instructor proud of her. He has excellent technical skills but also a very good approach to teaching that is keeping her interested and excited. It is certainly worth the price of $25 per hour for this service.
Tips
If at all possible, find someone who teaches as their profession to be the instructor for music lessons. They are used to working with children and have patience and also the experience of handling different types of kids and knowing how to motivate them and keep them moving towards a goal. A professional musician might seem like a better choice, but I think a teacher is the right decision. Also, sit and watch the first few lessons to hear what he says and be comfortable with the way he talks to your child and presents the information.
