Description of service
The temporary hair straightening service I received involved the use of ceramic hair fusion technology. Straightening irons composed of ceramic protect your hair because ceramic emits gentle infra-red heat, which helps to lock in moisture in the hair cuticle. Another advantage of ceramic flat irons is that they heat evenly and quickly, and one incurs less hair breakage as ceramic plates are very smooth. The straightening process involved placing sections of my hair, which had been blown dry, between the two ceramic plates of the flat iron and smoothing the hair from root to tip. In addition to the ceramic flat iron my service included deep cleanse shampoo, conditoning, and a blow-out with an ionic hair dryer. The total cost of these services was $55. My stylist recommended I receive a trim which was an additional $20. In addition, I chose to receive a deep conditioning service called, hydrating steam therapy, which claimed to replenish the moisture level in my hair. I felt this service was important as temporary hair straightening involves applying a considerable amount of direct heat to the hair which can be very drying. This service added an additional $20 to may overall cost. Including a 20% tip, my final cost for services was $115.
Review of Service
I was very pleased with the temporary hair straightening results I received. My hair did not incur any damage as a result of the hair straightening process and I was left with silky smooth, pin straight hair which still managed to maintain a considerable amount of body. My hair remained straight until I washed it despite bouts with heat and humidity. My stylist explained the steps of the process as we went through them, which was particularly important as I was a first time client. I also appreciated that the shampoo bowls were constructed in such a way that the client is able to sit practically upright. I did feel the service was a good value for the price, except for the steam treatment. I would not choose that service in the future. However, there were many aspects of the service with which I was not pleased. For instance, although my stylist explained the process to me, she was often abrasive and aggressively attempted to sell the salon's preferred styling products. At one point she asked me what styling products I currently used. When I replied she laughed and stated that she could not believe anyone still used drugstore products as opposed to high-end salon products. Additionally, on two occassions she explained to me which product she would be using on my hair and why the prouct was necessary only to return and say the salon was out of stock so she would be using a different product. Also, I felt my appointment was rushed after the first hour. My stylist informed me that each stylist is allotted one hour in which to complete each client's services. My appointment lasted longer than average as my hair is waist length. During the second hour of my appointment my stylist was visibly irritated and mentioned numerous times that I should have informed the receptionist when booking my appointment that my hair was longer than average. I did not know this was my responsibility as I was a first time customer and clients are unaware of the 1 hour rule imposed upon stylists.
Tips
If you wish to have your hair temporarily straightened I would recommend that you research the various methods availble, as well as the salons and stylists who provide the services. Although, I researched the salon at which I received my service, I did not acquire adequate information regaring my stylist. Referrals are particularly important when obtaining a new stylist as they can provide you with invaluable information. If you are able to speak with someone who has received temporary hair straightening from the stylist in whom you are interested then you will have an idea of the level of service you can expect to receive. It may also be beneficial to ask questions upon booking your appointment such as, "does the cost of the service vary according to the length of my hair? How long does a typical appointment last? What steps are taken to prevent heat damage and hair breakage?" Receiving a consultation from the stylist before your appointment would also be beneficial. The consultation would provide the stylist with the opportunity to determine your hair type and needs before your appointment as well as allowing you the opportunity to determine if the stylists is someone from whom you would feel comfortable receiving service.
