Description of service
After a rearend collision, my rear bumper was replaced by a local body shop. The cost breakdown is as follows: $287 labor, $130 for a generic replacement bumper. The body shop mentioned they could patch the rear bumper but the shape of it would not be corrected. I opted to have the bumper replaced with a new one.
Review of Service
The fit and finish of this job was perfect. The bumper is an absolute identical match to the original one. The fit is perfect with no gaps or wavy places, as this bumper is fiberglass. The paint looks great with clearcoat and matches the rest of the car.
One thing the body shop did miss was the reattachment of the wind dam below the bumper. It was left hanging. This could have been a hazard if it had worked loose. It could have became disconnected and interfered with the driver behind me had it came loose while driving.
Tips
Always inquire about generic parts if available. They should be available, as generic, or "aftermarket" parts manufacturing is a HUGE business these days. The only time I would consider original factory parts is for electronics or other delicate functioning devices. Aftermarket parts are typically 50 to 70 percent of the cost of factory parts and in most cases, particularly in body parts, have absolutely no structural disadvantage to factory parts.
