Description of service
The driver's side rear suspension was making some strange, spring-like noises and I feared that it might be the struts. Upon taking the car to the mechanic and having the problem inspected, it turned out it was the anti-sway bar joint that needed to be replaced. The mechanic had to order the part from the local Saturn dealer. Overall, it took about 1 hour for do the work.
Review of Service
When I drove the car to the repair shop, a friendly service tech came out to greet me. Just as I opened my door, the tech asked what he could do for me. I told him that I thought my struts needed to be replaced but I wasn't sure. Then I gently pushed down on the driver's side rear panel and released it so he could hear the sound that was coming from that part of the car. Prepared for the worst, he said that it might be the struts but that he'd check to see what was happening. I went inside to fill out the necessary paperwork, gave him the keys to my car and left. About 15 minutes later, I received a phone call from the tech. He said that the struts were in fine condition and that it was the anti-sway bar joint that needed to be replaced. The part cost $50 and the rest went to labor and taxes. I went in expecting to spend more than $300 and walked away spending $159. I was a happy camper.
Tips
I have taken both of my vehicles to this one shop for suspension, alignment and tire work. Once you find someone you trust, stay with that shop so you feel good about the work that they do.
