Description of service
Two mid-range snow tires for a light truck, 88 dollars, tax $4.40; snow stud installation, 10 dollars; install two tires with balance, 25 dollars, for a total of $127.40. I got these at an auto-parts store that also is a garage and sells tires. This was all done while I waited.
Review of Service
They did a fine job installing and balancing my tires. As soon as they were done, I questioned how well the studs had been put in. I was told they were sticking out out odd angles because they are designed to "suck in" as the tire is first driven down the road. After driving home, I discovered about 5 studs fallen out right there in the driveway! I went back to the place and asked for them to re-stud them, but I was told it is against the law to re-stud tires that have been driven on. As I saw it, they'd sold me two studded tires, and what I had was two partially studded tires. Eventually they gave me 4 quarts of very premium motor oil.
Tips
Beware of chain type garages, muffler shops, and auto parts stores. If you do go, and have a question like mine, don't go unless they agree to fix it, or provide some kind of written guarantee to do so shortly. Pay careful attention to any repairs or maintenance performed at such a place, and if possible ask an independent mechanic to have a look at it. The other mechanic can look over their work when you are at their garage having some other type of maintenance done. If you're still not satisfied, go higher up the chain, and don't quit. I kind of regret accepting the motor oil for compensation, but that's what you get. Lesson learned!
