Description of service
I paid 595 for the computer diagnostics and replacement of my Impala's catalytic converter. 165.00 of that was the labor charge, the rest was for the catalytic converter and two gaskets. They removed the catalytic converter and replaced it with a new one. The part was pricey because the model has a California emissions code catalytic converter and it's twice the cost of a regular one. The California code converter is only available through the dealership so I could not have the work done at a muffler shop.
Review of Service
The service was good, I took the car in and they hooked it up for diagnostics. I knew in less than 30 minutes that the problem was a pretty big one. They did not have the part in stock so they ordered it and told me the labor would not take long, to come back at noon the next day and it would be ready, and it was. The service department guys were very nice and the parts department guy also, he explained why the converter cost so much more than a non- California code one.
Tips
Call around for prices on the part before you decide where to go. You will need your VIN number, which is the long ID number on your car registration form. They look up the converter with the help of this number. Find out if you can return the core of the old one for some money back if you get the part yourself. Next time I buy a car, I'm going to ask if it's California code emissions or not. Might save me money in the long run if it's not.
