Description of service
The car was taken in for inspection. The car failed inspection due to emissions. The catalytic converter was deemed in need of replacement, hoses connecting to it requiring replacement, and a new muffler was recommended. The muffler had minor damage, but it was recommended to be replaced so that the car could pass inspection.
Review of Service
Cost of repairs above does not include inspection price.
The muffler and exhaust pipe was replaced for about $150, parts and labor.
The catalytic converter repair was about $250.
The hoses and seals in the engine that were replaced cost about $60.
We later learned that the hoses and seals were not in need of replacement, that they could have simply been cleaned and reassembled.
Tips
If your car fails inspection, do not have the firm that gave a failing report do the repairs immediately. Get a second opinion on the car inspection. Less reputable firms may recommend massive and expensive repairs when lesser ones are needed.
If repairs are found to be necessary to pass inspection, do not have the repairs done by the inspecting firm. Have other repair shops give quotes for the repair work. Shop around to get the best price.
A shop may recommend that the car not be moved for failing inspection as a means of ensuring they get the repair work. Failing inspection does not mean your car is not drivable. Any shop that makes this claim should not have your business.
