Description of service
The air compressor, hoses, expansion valve and air filters were all replaced due to wear and age. This repair was done after complete failure of the air conditioning system.
Review of Service
The work took about two days. This did not include the time to order the parts, which was additional. About 800 of the total price was in parts. The remainder, approximately 750 dollars, was labor cost. Due to the amount of work done, we did not have to pay for air conditioning coolant.
We did have to pay about $50 in hazardous waste disposal fees and taxes to dispose of the remaining coolant in the air conditioning unit.
Tips
If you have a used car, get the air conditioning components used as well. For an older car, serviceable is the name of the game, and as long as it cools the car, it should be good for you to go. This can save over half of the list price over new components.
If it is autumn or winter, consider having the engine cooling system repaired but waiting to complete the air conditioning system repairs done. Staging the repairs in two steps can save on parts by eliminating the rush, letting you shop around for cheaper parts. However, you do risk paying higher labor costs due to two separate repair visits.
