Description of service
Our car had been pulling to the right for quite some time. We had gotten a few alignments and tire balancings done, but they did not help. We decide to take it in to a local mechanic in North Ogden. He informed us that we were in need of all four of our barrings being replaced on our Xterra. He gave us a quote of $700. We called around and got quotes from other local mechanics and dealers. They were all ranging from 700-800 dollars. Luckily, my husband worked with a man who had a shop and did some repair on the side. He was willing to try and do it for us. It is quite an extensive job. You are mostly paying just for the labor on a job like this. This is why it cost us half of the amount a dealer or regular mechanic would have charged. We brought the car into him on a Friday night and he worked on it that weekend. It was not able to complete it all then, though. I think we picked it up that next Tuesday. So although it may have taken a bit longer than a mechanic, it was definitely worth it to us.
Review of Service
First I will review the Services of the first mechanic. They were great to diagnose the problem for us. We picked it up from them and they did not charge us a thing for their time. I have been to plenty of mechanics who would have charged us just to diagnose, so they were great. Second, the review of the man who fixed our car is great also. He did not make much off of fixing our car for us. His price was not much above the cost of the barring parts themselves. We lucked out definitely with that. He was willing to work around our schedule as of course we were to his. The repair may have taken a bit longer with him, but I was definitely not complaining. We brought it in on a Friday night and I believe we picked it up that next Tuesday. My husband did end up giving him a $50 tip though, just for being so nice to us. When we drove our car home it was like having a brand new car. No more pulling to the right. It finally after all the time we owned it drove straight down the road. I didn't even have to steer if I didn't want to.
Tips
Tips I could give for replacing the barrings in your car is to first of all call around. You would be surprised at the range of cost between mechanics and dealers. I think most people know though that a dealer is usually more expensive. Then I would start asking around as my husband did. You never know who you may talk to that has experience and the willingness to help you out. If you can find a person to do it for you on the side, they should definitely be cheaper than anywhere else. This is how it was in our case. You should probably, like we did in our case, be positive that is the problem. This will time if you are to have a person who is willing to help you out do it on the side. Next, I know your time is valuable, but if you can stay flexible you could end up saving a lot of money in the end. It may have been faster to have taken our care to a mechanic shop, but in the end we would have been out a lot more money. So ask around and stay flexible would be my major tips
