Description of service
This was a smog check on a car that had failed it's last smog check. It was an older car, and the station recommended that I do a precheck so they could see if it would pass before they ran the official test, which would immediately send the results to Sacramento. If it failed by more than a certain margin, the car would have been tagged a Gross Polluter and have to go through a more expensive test. This was an older car, so I just wanted to keep it on the road as cheaply as possible.
Review of Service
The car didn't pass the pretest, but they were able to figure out that it needed a new EGR valve, and were able to replace it for not all that much. Since I'd had them do the repair, they then gave me a recheck for free, and it passed, so the car is good for another two years, plus it's nice to know that I'm not polluting as much.
Tips
If you have an older car, it can be worth it to do a precheck. Otherwise you might have to spend more time and money taking it to a different smog check station if it gets tagged as a gross polluter.
