Description of service
I had the rear differential replaced on the Jeep. It had been going bad for almost a year, but I was told to drive it until it went bad since it could take a long time to actually go bad and since it was an expensive repair. I didn't receive a break-down of the parts and labor, but the total included everything. The repair took about 3-1/2 days, which was inconvenient, but not so bad.
Review of Service
I think the repair shop did a pretty good job. I'm not sure whether it's completely fixed since I can still hear a slight whining sound that was there before the repair; it's definitely not as loud, but it's not a noise that I always had on the Jeep. I had a hard time finding someone to work on it anyway as I was told by my regular mechanic that it takes special tools and training, but they seemed to do a pretty good job.
Tips
I've heard this is a fairly common problem on the Jeep Cherokees. My only tip would be that if possible, find out where another Jeep owner has taken their vehicle for the repair. As stated above, I'm not completely sure it's fixed, although it's better. I didn't want to pay for the repair through the dealer who quoted about $300 higher and wanted the car for a week, so I think it's good to shop around.
