Description of service
I paid for towing, and removal of melted wires. Over the years wires had melted onto the engine, causing it to not work properly. It broke down twice and I had to pay over $300 in towing fees. Once I got to the auto body shop, I had to pay an additional 1 thousand for parts (the wires and parts of the engine were completely ruined) and I also had to pay over $1000 for labor. Since this wasn't a great car to begin with I was very upset with having to pay such a large amount for such services. I wasn't preparred to lay down this much money. Insurence didn't cover much of the issue, since the car was older and not as safe. I had not gotten the most expensive insurance plan, thinking the vehicle was in average shape. It was a very odd thing what happened with the wires, that it also messed up my air conditioning as well. I did not have air conditioning from that moment on. I did not feel like shelling out even more money to pay for a luxery. I can't imagine how much that would have been. Also, I think some sort of road side assistance would have been beneficial.
Review of Service
Since I had to deal with so many different people (the tow truck driver, as well as the mechanics) my review of the services varies. I think the charge of towing is way overpriced considering we only had to go a few miles. If I had roadside assistance it wouldn't have been nearly as much. Although, I have to mention the tow truck came reletively quickly, and that is not always the case. I can think of countless times where I had waited hours on the side of the road just waiting for the tow truck to show up. The driver was also friendly and helpful, so that was an added bonus. As far as my experience with the mechanic, I think they were way overpriced, and wish I had gone somewhere else to get estimates first. They were patient with me, but I could also see an eagerness to get as much money from me as possible. Not knowing much about cars, it sounded like they were speaking a foreign language to me, explaining which parts they had to order, and how difficult the labor would be. I think $1000 for labor is a bit absurd, considering they were done in two days!
Tips
I would, first of all, not get an older car that doesn't have great insurance. Next time I am going to get a better insurance plan, a newer car, and roadside assistance. I think roadside assistance would have helped greatly with the towing fees, and would also alleviate any stress of how much the total cost was going to be. I would have also went to a few different auto shops to explore what different prices would have been, because I think I got a bit cheated on the labor price. I know they can't do much about parts, but labor sounded a little over a realistic amount. If I were not in a rush to get my car back, I would have treated this case completely different and did more research, finding out exactly what was wrong with my car, rather than just trusting these guys. I also should have asked some of my close friends where they go to get auto work done, and what their experiences had been like. It is too easy to get cheated out of money when you know nothing about what you are paying for. Being educated in car parts would be one of my most important tips.
