Description of service
We put our 1998 Grand Prix in the shop to figure out what the issue was with our car. We had broken a timing belt the week before, then overheated, put water in the tank to get it home, but evidently that cracked a head gasket by driving it like that.
There was a god awful smell from the engine and the car kept overheating, even on the journey over to the garage. The garage we took it to was one that was attached to a gas station with a small two-bay operation. The mechanic came recommended by my stepfather, so we trusted him with our "baby".
Review of Service
We were unhappy with the service, as the mechanic called us to say it could be problem A or problem B, but he wouldn't know until he removed an engine part which would cost us labor. $400 later, we were given back a car we had managed to drive there with the engine in pieces, unfixed and now entirely undrivable, and still had to pay to tow it back to our apartment.
Tips
If your Grand Prix overheats DON'T DRIVE IT or you'll end up with a very expensive paperweight! Upon further research we found this model year is prone to head gasket problems.
