Description of service
I own a 1998 Pontaic grand am 4 door. I have owned this vehicle since 1998 and have maintained this vehicle on the manufacturer schedule of maintance. My problems stated with poor fuel milage and then move to poor acceleration. Finally one Sunday morning the vehicle stalled in traffic and I was unable to get the vehicle started again. I had the vehicle towed to a local, national car parts and repair company. I knew from past experience that either my fuel filter needed to be replaced or that I needed a new fuel pump.
Review of Service
I was hoping for the fuel filter was clogged because that is a much cheaper repair then replacing the fuel pump. Much to my disappointment, they did diagnose that the fuel pump was faulty and did in fact need replacing. The overall repair is fairly simple. Take out the old fuel pump and install the new one. The labor is the most laborious part of this job. Like in most cars made in the late 1990's, the fuel pump is in the gas tank. So to replace it you need to drain the fuel then remove the gas tank to get at the pump. A little bit of a job. I dropped the vehicle off on a Monday and it was ready to pick up on Tuesday. The vehicle is back to normal and there are no additional problems to report.
Tips
Check around. Lots of dealers charge a wide range of prices for this service. Also check with a mechanic friend. A lot of people are knowledgeable on this repair so you might have a friend that can do the job for a lot cheaper.
